Press release:
EUFA welcomes the new Members of the European Parliament Fisheries Committee
Brussels, 10 July 2019
The European Fisheries Alliance (EUFA) would like to warmly welcome the new Members of the European Parliament Fisheries Committee. MEPs are taking office at a crucial time for the future of fisheries management and our industry, particularly given that the EU and the UK will be redefining the terms of their relationship in the years to come.
EUFA supports a mutually beneficial joint future agreement that guarantees the sustainability of fish stocks above all. It should also respect the spirit and terms of the Withdrawal Agreement and the Political Declaration. EUFA is looking forward to working with the Members of the Fisheries Committee, the European Commission, the Council, and all relevant parties to achieve that goal.
EUFA chairman Gerard van Balsfoort added: “Brexit is an existential challenge for the fishing industry and the future of fisheries management, and the new MEPs will play an important part in shaping the EU’s and the UK’s common future. We also welcome the election of an experienced Chairman such a Chris Davies to lead the committee at this decisive time. Mr. Davies has played an active role in designing the Common Fisheries Policy in the course of his many years in the European Parliament and we look forward to working with him and the PECH committee.”
